‘The Chase’: Who Are The ‘Chasers’? Everything You Need To Know About Matthew Mercer and Skylar Astin

When *The Chase* premiered in 2022, it quickly became a fan-favorite game show blending strategy, humor, and celebrity cameos. But behind the scenes, the show’s success hinges on its two hosts: Matthew Mercer and Skylar Astin. Mercer, a seasoned voice actor and tabletop RPG veteran, brings depth to the game’s narrative, while Astin, a charismatic comedian and actor, keeps the energy high. Their dynamic—part mentor, part rival—makes *The Chase* more than just a quiz show; it’s a performance where every answer is a step toward victory.

Matthew Mercer: The Strategist and Storyteller

Matthew Mercer is no stranger to competitive challenges. As the voice of Dungeons & Dragons’ Dungeon Master, he’s known for crafting immersive, high-stakes narratives. On *The Chase*, he shifts gears but keeps the same intensity. Mercer’s role is to guide contestants through the game’s intricate puzzles, offering hints that feel like clues in a mystery. His calm, measured tone contrasts with the show’s fast-paced action, making him the perfect anchor for players who need direction.

What sets Mercer apart is his ability to balance authority with approachability. He doesn’t just tell contestants what to do—he explains the *why* behind each move. Whether it’s a trivia question or a strategic play, Mercer ensures players understand the game’s deeper logic. This isn’t just about winning; it’s about learning, and Mercer makes that process engaging.

Skylar Astin: The Wild Card

Skylar Astin, on the other hand, is the show’s wildcard. A comedian and actor best known for *The Office* and *Parks and Recreation*, Astin brings a playful, unpredictable energy to *The Chase*. His role is to challenge Mercer’s strategies, often pushing contestants to think outside the box. Astin’s humor—whether it’s a sarcastic remark or a dramatic pause—keeps the show from feeling too rigid.

But Astin’s influence goes beyond entertainment. His interactions with Mercer create a dynamic where the hosts are almost like rivals, each trying to outmaneuver the other. This tension adds layers to the game, making it more than just a test of knowledge. It’s a battle of wits, and Astin’s role is to keep it exciting.

Why Their Dynamic Works

Their partnership is a masterclass in contrast. Mercer’s methodical approach and Astin’s spontaneity create a perfect balance. Mercer ensures the game is fair and strategic, while Astin keeps it fun. Together, they turn *The Chase* into something more than a quiz show—it’s a performance where every contestant is a star.

For fans of game shows, this dynamic is refreshing. It’s rare to see hosts who are both experts and entertainers. Mercer and Astin prove that the best shows combine skill with charm, making *The Chase* a standout in the genre.

What This Means for Viewers

If you’re watching *The Chase*, you’re not just playing a game—you’re experiencing a show where the hosts are as much a part of the fun as the contestants. Mercer and Astin’s chemistry makes each episode feel fresh, whether you’re a trivia buff or just looking for a good time.

For those who enjoy game shows, *The Chase* offers a unique twist. It’s not just about answering questions correctly; it’s about adapting to the hosts’ strategies and seeing how far you can go. And with Mercer and Astin at the helm, every episode is a new adventure.
